In an age where traditional wisdom seems outdated, Hislop prompts us to consider a return to ancient technologies, viewed through a lens of renewed value. Through a temporal tear, we glimpse a fossilised future, preserved for examination. The Lab Gallery at Summerhall presents works as artefacts, in the atmosphere of an arid landscape. Fossilised aluminium wall reliefs evoke the solemnity of ritual, woven from the fibres of forgotten species. Amidst this tableau, the weaving of tubing suggests a primal life force pulsating through the veins of time, connecting past, present, and future in an intricate dance of creation and legacy. Works evoke the evolution of materials and their histories, offering insights into a higher realm of understanding, highlighting both loss and innovation. Through a mix of materials and their storied histories of forming and using vessels with fire for the transmutation of states and psyches, we see a view of the past to the future, revealing what is lost and what is made. Hislop investigates the progression from ancient tools to modern scientific glassware, showcasing human ingenuity and technological advancement. Exploring designs reminiscent of ancient alchemists, such as Cleopatra the Alchemist and Mary the Jewess, whose complex apparatuses for distillation and sublimation hint at the convergence of artistry and scientific inquiry. Mythic Instruments invites you to embark on a transcendent odyssey through time, where the boundaries between science and spirituality dissolve, and the echoes of ancient wisdom resonate with newfound relevance. Hislop presents an ensemble of cast, forged and found pieces in Effusus Over Nothing, drawing upon her material knowledge of glass, metals and ceramics to explore the cultural and ecological implications of the soft rush (named juncus effusus in Latin). Juncus Effusus is associated with infestation for many farmers, who struggle to remove the rapid spreading plant from their land, whilst manufacturers often find the process required to separate its soft inner from its woody stem too time consuming to be of use. Yet, in many cultures, the soft rush has acted — and still acts — as a primary making material, including in the production of hats, baskets, candle wicks, tatami mats and religious symbols. As such, Hislop’s work is, in one sense, a ‘fuss over nothing’, after which the exhibition takes its name. Juncus effusus is a common plant whose stubborn material rejects the fast pace of capitalist production — its profit value is near zero. But in Hislop’s work, the sweet smelling plant is (re)valorised, opening dialogues with its past(s) as well as with its future(s). <img width="2000" height="3000" width_o="2000" height_o="3000" encounter a series of apparitions, islands and ponds. In the second gallery, glass pools, specked with black, like polluted waters. They look like petri dishes from afar, echoing Hislop’s interest in laboratory apparatus. In Effusus Over Nothing Hislop uses these islands to speak to the purifying properties of the plant, whose roots support large numbers of bacteria that aid water filtration, and whose dense mass prevents detritus (such as roadside plastics) from entering bodies of water in which the plant grows. These pools metamorphose between liquid, glass and light. For Hislop this is alchemy: concerned with the transmutation of matter, involving a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination. For this exhibition Hislop has undertaken many alchemical processes, including the casting of a rushlight holder from molten iron. Here, as in her other hand-modelled objects, the finger marked surface reveals the material transformations that the holder has undergone. An emphasis on (un)finished surfaces is a key part of Hislop’s work, serving to capture the movement between forms and matter through which her sculptures are borne. In this vein, alongside the iron holder are a series of smoke drawings in which the artist has caught shapes and shadows created by the burning of the rushlight — a wick made by immersing the soft, sponge-like centre of the plant in tallow. The drawings are frenetic and wisp and fume. They are atmospheric and evoke, for Hislop as for author Washington Irving, the “mischievous powers of the air”, the product of “a feeble yellow ray, dimly illumining the chamber, and making uncouth shapes and shadows on the walls” (Dolph Heyliger, 1822). From Hislop’s drawings you can imagine the misty, murky light emitted by the candle when burnt. In this space of the rush it is hard to breathe. The air is polluted, the water is pocked, then a glowing bronze canister appears. The accumulation of waterside environments, smoke drawings and a gas canister fixed to its mask by a sweet smelling rope of rush creates a compelling image. However, it also brings to light the interconnected way in which Hislop and the rush have learnt to make: together, by relation, as a web. As Hislop states: “it’s only an ecology that keeps them [juncus effusus] alive”, which is mimicked in her choice of installation. Collected, accumulated, assembled, combined, Hislop takes a quasi-museological approach to the runt of the rush family tree in Effusus Over Nothing, exploring the plant in a diversity of soft, spiked, sweet and bitter forms and uses. The effect of this exhibition is, for Hislop, to show how alternate forms of production and of living with our local ecologies exist within the rush. A series of material experiments and fabrications, Effusus Over Nothing is a laboratory, pertaining to the future relationship — by way of past techniques and usages — between the human hand and the There’s more than one way to describe any knot. For her first solo show, Unknot, artist Emma Hislop pulls together threads of encounters and research across alchemy, mysticism, quantum physics, taxonomy and dual/alternative worlds and world views. Through Hislop’s multi-disciplinary practice she explores her perspective of the world as an assortment of unique connections. The exhibition showcases her fascination with approaches and methods of research into esoteric themes. She presents a cohesive look at the value of material processes and their individual, masterful skillsets as both sciences and crafts. Unknot shows resulting artefacts from concentrated exploration into metals (steel, aluminium, iron and bronze) and glass. From Hislop’s initial self- taught learning to working in a lab with scientific glassblowers, she has maintained a fascination with the mythology and molecular movements of these ‘allegedly solid’ materials. The work gives familiarity through recognisable motifs, contrasted by an unease built by her curiosity for the uncanny. Tension is a recurring theme for Hislop; whether by precarity of placement, the delicate opposing the hard or awaiting a fate (a movement or possible happening). ‘Apprentice Pillar’ exemplifies both motif and a hidden humour in Hislop’s approach. Its Rosslyn Chapel namesake’s decoration is revered for its mythic mastery, graced upon the carver by higher forces. Hislop plays on the legends surrounding the original – a monument of craft and mysticism embedded in science and religion. The comparison verges on parody, relating the opulently carved stone pillar to pine furniture and banister spindles, stone balustrade remakes and archaic columns. Wedged between mirror-cut steel drums is an excess of bronze that echoes these references; the wound serpent, synonymous with science’s alchemical roots, the ecological ouroboros (self-eating snake) and divination. Intertwining continues into ‘Emerald Tablet’ – Hislop hopes to show that our belief of science as fact is more closely linked to myth than truth. Etched green glass gives a direct link to the title Unknot, the name of a closed loop single knot in mathematical knot theory. From maritime display cases, defining elements of the periodic table, DNA and mathematical unpicking of our world and human make up, knot theory is more than a rope-wound trefoil. Hislop finds the study of closed-end knots to echo her view of the world. The work’s title and form embody the beginning of knowledge, said to start with an emerald tablet inscribed by Hermes Trismegistus with coded details on how to transmute the philosopher’s stone with life’s purpose, featuring the fabled message “as above, so below”– and so began Hermeticism, alchemy and science. As artist in residence, she has explored the concept of a circular economy through her unique lens as an artist. Using her perspective and the threads of her practice, she has conceived a theatrical production that may or may not exist."Plaeriet for Aether" is the script of this work which combines metaphors of alchemy, mysticism, Jung, Macbeth, and circular economy schools of thought. Hislop evokes a mythology that she calls, "a semi-fictional creation story for futurists".The physical one-of-a-kind text will exist only in its semi-reality as a physical book as object, printed with Book Works, London with ecological and biological inks and papers. This book crosses into object as it finds its home in a glass slipcase bed. Should the script become a production in the future the book/object regenerates as oyster mushrooms spawn inside, embodying the words, to be harvested and eaten by the artist.The book/object becomes artefact or 'relic of a possiblity' alongside the props named in the script; Gurgling gut - a scientifically glass blown stomach, Glugous - a scientifically glass blown stomach glug jug, and Bevelled Perspective, a convex mirror. The series find their home to wait, their purgatory, in the no. 34 offices of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation on the Isle of Wight. artificial digestion. Taking 20 litres of cyanobacteria (blue algal bloomed) pond water through 8 processes of natural filtration until becoming clean drinking water; sphagnum moss, charcoal, gravel, sand, corriander, pine sap, unvitrified ceramic and reoxygenation.&nbsp; Ecologus plays on research into the parallel rise between chronic gut disease and climate catastrophic events. Taking inspiration from agricultural practices on cattle, namely fistulation, the digestive system is compared to terrestrial ecology. The scientific aesthetic straddles laboratory, pseudo science and a medical incubator. Sat in a polluted pond we are asked to consider from the ecosphere down to the locale habitat. Using candle wicks to represent the history and significance of a recurring motif of juncus effusus the common rush, it is clear the roots of what we see and think we know go much deeper.&nbsp; Winner
